Loud mouth trucker (04/12/2022)
Just when my bowl of soup arrived, a middle-aged man walked in. He looked around for a few seconds, then sat down at the counter between two other drivers. I suspected he hadn’t seen a shower or razor in a week, and that he might’ve worked and slept in those clothes even longer.
As soon as he hit the stool he started talking to his neighbors. Instantly I wished that I had chosen a table at the other side of the restaurant. This guy was one of those people who talk in such a loud tone of voice that you have to listen, whether you want to or not. And that wasn’t even the worst part.
He was also a Big Talker. His truck was faster and more powerful then everyone else’s, he made an incredible amount of money and he was smarter than any DOT officer or policeman he ever had to deal with.
Am I boring you? (4/12/2022)
I’m sure that many of you have encountered the following situation a few times
You are in the middle of telling some people an interesting story. Suddenly someone enters the room. Right away that person is at the center of attention, and you have stop talking because nobody is listening to you anymore. And it gets worse. After the attention for the newcomer has died, no one in the group asks you to resume, or even wants to find out how your story ends.
Suddenly you have the feeling that none of them were interested in the first place, and you have just been wasting your breath. It feels disrespectful on their part.
After all these years (4/11/2022)
In the weeks leading up to the written exams, one of our teachers made us come back on our regular free Wednesday afternoons and made us complete extra tests.
We weren’t happy about it; didn’t we spend enough hours in the classroom already?
“It’s for your own good,” he said. “You will benefit from it, trust me.”
He sounded like my mother. Whenever she said that something was for my own good it usually meant I had to do something that I hated.
So, while we could see the sunshine through the windows, and other students having fun in the park adjacent to the school, we were slaving away doing our bookkeeping assignment. Trying to finish as fast as possible didn’t make a difference. We were not to leave until the last student had finished. And the slowest ones always were subjects of frustration.
It usually took two long hours before we were dismissed and the sighs of relief could be heard in the other classrooms, I’m sure.
Do your research (4/10/2022)
Just this morning I saw a post on a local Facebook group that caught my attention.
The woman said that her brother by accident ordered two cordless drill sets. All right, it can happen.
She is offering the extra set, with a description of what is included and a bad picture, for $100. And according to her, that is a great deal.
It seemed a little high to me and did what I always do in such a case: I did some research. It took me 3 seconds to find out that this tool sells new on Amazon for $39.95. I was not surprised; I know tools well and I had never heard of this brand. And the fact that it has ‘Pro’ in it means absolutely nothing.
Cheaply made power tools are imported from China by the boat load and unfamiliar brand names make a frequent appearance. And sometimes they disappear just as fast.
If you need to do a job and want to spend little money on a tool, that is the way to go I suppose. But I would advise people to stick with a well-established brand.
